Today, alongside the Christian Socialist Movement David Lammy MP and Minister for Skills launched a pamphlet based on his CSM Tawney Memorial Lecture: Faith and Politics.
Not long ago commentators were predicting the disappearance of religious faith: now as David Lammy says, it is again a powerful force, 'talked about and debated, not just in churches, mosques and synagogues, but also the corridors of power.'
Some religion can be reactionary, but Lammy is firmly with those who, for centuries, have woven faith with progressive political vision. With Tawney, he follows a creed that values every human being equally and inspires action to tackle all that prevents people from flourishing - both material poverty and 'the poverty of experience that we see across society.'
Churches and faith movements are making a positive impact in many different ways, Lammy says, and should have more confidence about the contribution they are making to society. And heencourages them to be part of a social movement ‘which challenges all of us, including government,to reconsider what we really value in society and mobilise ourselves to achieve it’. For in the end,Lammy argues, ‘what energises people is not policy forums and consultations, but the opportunityto give purpose to their passion, to campaign in the knowledge that change is possible…’
This is a thoughtful, passionate and inspiring essay from a politician with vision, faith anda finger on the pulse of the communities he serves.
