LABOUR SELECT HIGH PROFILE CAMPAIGNER AS PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE
Yesterday, Labour Party members across Hornsey and Wood Green selected Karen Jennings to be Labour’s Parliamentary candidate at the next general election. Karen Jennings lives in the constituency and is a senior trade union official. She was selected on Sunday at a special conference at Hornsey School for Girls, attended by hundreds of local Labour Party activists.
Karen Jennings started her working life as an NHS nurse before moving into the trade union movement. She is currently the National Secretary of UNISON and leads the union’s policy and campaigns on health. She represents almost half a million health workers and chairs the most senior negotiating committee and health policy forum in the NHS.
Karen Jennings said:
“I am delighted to have been selected to be Labour’s Parliamentary candidate in my home seat of Hornsey and Wood Green. The next general election will not be about protest, it will be a stark choice between a Labour government or a Conservative government. I intend to spend every day between now and the election listening and speaking with local residents and bringing them back to Labour. “
Tottenham Labour MP David Lammy commented:
"The Labour Party in Hornsey & Wood Green has made clear their ambition to take back the constituency. Karen is a heavyweight candidate with a proven track record over many years of campaigning on health issues. She has a formidable trade union record and will be able to reach out to public sector workers in the constituency and beyond.”
Councillor George Meehan, Haringey Labour Group Leader and Vice Chair of Hornsey and Wood Green Labour Party said:
“In a strong field, Karen was exceptional. She has a deep knowledge of the national issues that matter to people round here, and an understanding of campaigning second to none. She’ll make a great Labour MP for our area, and I look forward to working closely with her before and after the next election. Yesterday we put the Liberal Democrats on notice that we have listened, we have renewed our party and we fully expect to win the next election in Hornsey & Wood Green.”
