'Shop refusal a safe bet' - letter from David Lammy.
Friday, 23 November 2007
Dear Editor,

The decision by Haringey Council to refuse a licence for yet another betting shop on Green Lanes should be applauded, as should the hard work and commitment of the residents' groups who campaigned, petitioned and made their voices heard, and encouraged others to do so.

While planning regulations must of course take into account the clear benefits to consumers of fair competition among any type of business in a neighbourhood, we should not let competition laws be the sole judge of how our communities are shaped.

As with other recent licence applications, I have worked closely with the Ladder Community Safety Partnership, and alongside them and residents, wrote to officially oppose this licence. Likewise, I personally signed the community petition.

This is not nimbyism - nor is it nanny state. This is an example of the voice of our community speaking up for the character of our neighbourhoods - and being listened to. This is something I will support in our community and will fight to keep this on the political agenda in Parliament.
