| David Votes for a Total Ban on Smoking in Public Places |
| Wednesday, 15 February 2006 |
David Lammy, Member of Parliament for Tottenham today voted in favour of a complete ban on smoking in all pubs, bars and clubs in England.
All MPs were entitled to a free vote in Parliament and David used the opportunity to gather the views of as many constituents as possible before deciding how to vote on this issue.
David sent surveys to hundreds of constituents and urged others to complete the survey on his website. 81% of respondents replied in favour of a total ban on smoking in public places.
David Lammy said:
“The response by my constituents has been excellent with hundreds of replies arriving in a matter of days. With 81% of respondents in support of a complete ban on smoking in public places, I took their views to Parliament on Tuesday evening and voted for a ban with no exceptions to the rule.”
The views were also echoed by Haringey Council and the Director of Public Health at Haringey Primary Care Trust.
Councillor Kate Wynne, Cabinet Member for Social Services and Health on Haringey Council, said
“I am delighted that David will be pushing for a complete ban on smoking. People working in bars, pubs and restaurants, and non-smokers visiting them, should not have to suffer second-hand smoke. I feel strongly, as does Haringey Council that the government should work to improve everyone’s health.”
