You can't build a bridge from the centre - Fabian Quarterly Review

October 2, 2017

I spoke to the Fabian Society's Quarterly Review (Autumn edition) about my independent review of the criminal justice system, Grenfell and the next Labour government.

During the interview I reiterated my call for the state to intervene and spend taxpayers' money on social housing instead of housing benefit to private landlords.

Asked about the centre ground in UK politics, I said:

"What is the middle ground? My mother used to say you can't build a bridge from the centre ground... Yes we are creating a broad church but you've got to know where you stand. Because where I'm looking we've had a middle ground that seems to exclude the folk in Grenfell and if that's the middle ground then I'm not interested".
