On 6th April, I wrote a letter to Rob Wilson MP, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Civil Society, regarding the 'Tampon Tax' Fund donations made to Life - an organisation that opposes abortion and women's right to choose..
I voted to abolish the 'Tampon Tax' altogether when it was brought to a vote in Parliament in 2015. Following the vote, which the government won thanks to the support of Conservative MP's, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne MP offered a compromise arrangement: to keep the tax but use the funds raised to support organisations that work for the welfare of women across the country.
As a firm believer in a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body, I was disappointed to hear that a large portion of the tax funds this year was allocated to Life, an organisation that opposes and disseminates false information about abortions. My letter encourages the government to review this decision, as there are countless organisations in the UK that provide necessary benefits to women and are deserving of these funds.
