Letters to Haringey Council regarding Haringey Development Vehicle

February 14, 2017

In recent months I have raised my concerns regarding the Haringey Development Vehicle with the Council Chief Executive and Council Leader both in person and in writing on a number of occasions.

Below I have published two joint letters from myself and my Haringey Labour colleague Catherine West MP that were sent to Haringey Council Chief Executive Nick Walkley on 19th December and 11th January.

I have also published a full statement today (14th February) here.

Dear Nick

Re: Haringey Development Vehicle

We are writing to you regarding the Haringey Development Vehicle (HDV) following the meeting of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee on 14 December 2016.

As you are well aware, there is a desperate shortage of genuinely affordable housing in Haringey and the last few years has seen a significant rise in the cost of housing, both in the for sale and rental sectors, that far exceeds wage rises.

Whilst we welcome Haringey Council’s commitment to the delivery of 5,000 new homes, we would like an assurance that 50% of new units will be genuinely affordable. Also, could you provide us with some information as to how the scheme will ensure the effective delivery of new affordable homes for local people and confirm whether housing associations have been involved in the bidding process.

Finally, given the scale of this project we would like to request that Haringey Council consults more thoroughly with the Haringey residents before proceeding with this scheme.

We welcome any assurances you can provide and look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

David Lammy MP, Member of Parliament for Tottenham

Catherine West MP, Member of Parliament for Hornsey and Wood Green

Dear Nick

Re: Haringey Development Vehicle

We are writing to you following a reply sent by Dan Hawthorn, Assistant Director for regeneration, regarding the Haringey Development Vehicle (HDV). We have enclosed a copy of Dan Hawthorn’s reply for ease of reference.

We are grateful for the information provided within the briefing, but further to this, could you confirm what the levels of affordable housing each site identified for inclusion in the HDV is expected to yield, and whether non-profit providers i.e. housing associations will be approached before private sector partners?

We welcome any assurances you can provide and look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

David Lammy MP, Member of Parliament for Tottenham
