Last night (16th November) in Parliament I hosted an event discussing post-Brexit hate crime and what government, communities and the police can do about it. I was delighted to be joined by speakers including Diane Abbott MP, Steven Woolfe MEP, Dawn Butler MP, DCLG Minister Lord Bourne, David Davies MP, Nick Cohen, and Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton.
It is more important now than ever that we all standup against hatred and prejudice. I have been absolutely horrified by the wave of hate crimes that have taken place following the Brexit vote and I say very clearly: not in my name.
History tells us one thing. As the economy tanks, who do people turn on with even more venom? Immigrants, minorities, and those who are seen as 'other' and 'different'.
I will continue to stand up against hate and prejudice wherever I find it - intolerance must simply not be tolerated.
