Yesterday (7th November) I wrote to Work & Pensions Minister Caroline Nokes about unpaid child maintenance. There are 2 million single parents in the United Kingdom (1 in 4 of all families with dependent children and single parent families) and children living in single parent families are twice as likely to live in poverty than those in couple families.
At present single parents are owed almost £4 billion in unpaid child maintenance payments, and almost half of non-resident parents are in arrears. As Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Fatherhood I believe it is important to promote active and responsible fatherhood, and to ensure that Government policy encourages active and responsible fatherhood.
I asked the Government to set out how it plans to reduce the number of single parents affected by child maintenance payment arrears and collect outstanding maintenance payments.
