Letter on supported housing

July 22, 2016

Yesterday I wrote to Minister of State for Welfare Reform Lord Freud opposing the Government's planned cuts to the Housing Benefit paid to people living in supported housing - including those with mental health problems and disabilities.

Whilst the Government professes to be a 'one nation Government' acting in the interests of the future, welfare cuts that will hit the most vulnerable hardest are totally wrong and I will continue to oppose them in the strongest possible terms.

I have copied the full letter below:

Dear Lord Freud

I am very concerned about your planned cuts to Housing Benefit paid to people living in supported housing, many of whom suffer from sever mental illness. These citizens are some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

I note that in her speech on entering 10 Downing Street on 13 July 2016 the Prime Minister stated "if you have mental health problems, there's not enough help to hand".

I agree wholeheartedly with the Prime Minister on this matter. Therefore I would be grateful if you would now confirm that the proposed cuts to Housing Benefit for people living in supported housing, which were due to apply from April 2018, will be scrapped in line with the Prime Minister's statement.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
