Earlier today my colleague Andy Slaughter MP secured an Urgent Question on safety in prisons.
I asked the Justice Secretary Michael Gove MP the following question:
"I have spent a lot of time in prisons over the last few months and there are two things that staff have raised with me.
"The first is that they are optimistic about the reform context that the Secretary of State has created and he should be congratulated for that. But the second thing that they have raised repeatedly in prisons across the country is staff numbers, which have fallen substantially.
"In the new Government which we expect to begin shortly, does he hope to see that reform agenda continue, but also is it possible now that we are moving away from austerity that staff numbers might begin to rise again?"
The Justice Secretary confirmed that his reform agenda will be central priority for the Government going forward, but failed to answer my question on staff numbers. Alongside my review into the over-representation of Black and Minority Ethnic individuals in the criminal justice system I will continue to hold the Government to account and ensure that our prisons are safe and properly resourced.
