Statement on racist abuse and threats

Recently there have been a number of reports in the media about racist abuse and threats that I have received since making my position on Brexit clear.

I have issued the following statement:

"Over the past 10 days I have received a barrage of abusive, racist and threatening messages. The police have asked me to report all of these incidents and I will continue to do so.

My staff have also been abused whilst going about their work. My message is clear - I'm not going anywhere.

I will continue to stand up for my constituents and what I believe in. I was born here and I am very proud to be British, but the outpouring of hatred, xenophobia and racism unleashed in the wake of the EU referendum is not the Britain that I know".

I look at the tidal wave of bigotry, hatred and intolerance that has been unleased recently in this country and I say: not in my name. This is not my country. I do not recognise this Britain and I am very concerned about the future of our country and the tone of our political debate.

Outlets that have reported on these threats and abuse I have read, and my reaction to them, include The Guardian, London Evening Standard, Daily Mail, ITV, Huffington Post, Metro and The Voice.
