My pledge on Brexit

Over the last few days I have received hundreds of letters and emails about the EU referendum and 'Brexit' from constituents and people from across the United Kingdom.

I would like to take the opportunity to make my position absolutely clear to my constituents.

On behalf of my constituents and the young people of this country I will never, ever vote for Brexit. The referendum was advisory and non-binding - our Parliament is sovereign and must approve any Brexit before Article 50 is invoked. I will not vote for the invoking of Article 50 or any other steps to begin the process of the UK leaving the European Union under any circumstances.

Three quarters of my constituents voted in favour of the UK remaining a member of the European Union and I will continue to stand up for them. My constituents will be the first to suffer when the post-Brexit recession hits and the impact of an economic downturn on my constituents is too grave for me to contemplate.

It is not too late to stop this and I will continue to make the case for a second vote because there is no absolutely no semblance of an exit plan in place.

It is clear that the Leave campaign has unravelled rapidly, so before Article 50 is invoked there will need to be a vote on a proper plan for Brexit, either in the House of Commons or in the form of a second referendum.
