Reaction to FOBT survey

April 20, 2016

The Mirror published the results of a survey of MPs carried out by ComRes showing that over two thirds (72%) of MPs want to see tougher regulation of Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs), 81% say FOBTs are having a negative impact on society and 67% say the £100 maximum stake is too high.

Fixed Odds Betting Terminals are the crack cocaine of gambling. Addiction to these high stakes machines is blighting people's lives and taking its toll on thousands of families. This is not about a light-hearted flutter - punters are able to stake £300 per minute and huge losses are quickly racked up.

It's about time that the Government took this issue seriously and acted to reduce the maximum stake on FOBTs, as well as giving local authorities the power to curb the ever-increasing number of betting shops appearing on our high streets.

I am delighted that my colleague Carolyn Harris has decided to establish the All Party Parliamentary Group on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals and I look forward to working with colleagues from across all parties to campaign against the proliferation of these reckless and damaging machines.
