Universities APPG meeting

This morning I spoke at a meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary University Group on widening participation for BME students in higher education. I raised the fact that a lower percentage of minority applicants to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities are offered places compared to white applicants, despite the fact that the number of BAME students achieving 3 ‘A’ grades continues to rise each year.

Talented students from ethnic minority and disadvantaged backgrounds are simply not getting the chances that they deserve and I will continue to push Ministers and our universities to do more to engage with the most talented students, regardless of their background.
