Today I once again stood shoulder to shoulder on the picket line with Junior Doctors at The Whittington Hospital in support of the Junior Doctors’ strike. The strike takes place over ongoing negotiations between government ministers and NHS bursaries over a new contract for junior doctors. As plans stand, the Government will scrap extra payments which Junior Doctors get for working unsocial hours. The plans to redefine anti-social hours will make it cheaper for hospitals to roster doctors on weekends and evenings and will in turn encourage unsafe shift patterns and threaten patient safety. I fully urge the government to listen to NHS staff and give Junior Doctors a fairer deal.
