Vote Against the Cut in Maintenance Grants
On Tuesday I voted in strong opposition against the Government's abolition of student maintenance grants. The cut will see the poorest 40% of students graduating with debts of £53,000 from a three year course. My recent visit to the IntoUniversity programme's Haringey centre and meeting representatives of the National Union of Students highlighted me of the importance of grants which enables access to university for teenagers from less well-off families. As a result I was even more astonished that the Government tried to pass the bill through a committee vote rather than having a proper commons debate on the matter.
