David has now been MP for Tottenham for almost 10 years now, and in this time, Tottenham has undergone an incredible transformation and regeneration. Government investment in schools has seen renovated school buildings for every secondary school in Tottenham, including the first ever 6th Form Centre for a generation. Investment has brought over 100 extra teachers for Tottenham, and has quadrupled the number of people that receive 5 A*-C GCSEs.
Tottenham has also been on the receiving end of huge increases in funding to regenerate the High Road and large grants to tackle anti-social behaviour.
David has campaigned tirelessly to improve the lives of the people of Tottenham. From campaigning to save the Post Offices on West Green Road and Broad Lane, to campaigning against the proliferation and clustering of betting shops, David has always been in tune with the problems and concerns of the ordinary people of Tottenham.
David was born in Tottenham, and grew up on Dongola Road, just off Philip Lane. He was raised by a single mother as one of 5 children, and went to school at Downhills Primary in West Green.
"Representing Tottenham, the place I was born and grew up in, is a unique honour which I never take for granted; it is also from here both as an MP and Minister that I draw inspiration and ideas. Our values, our pride in our diversity and our commitment infuse everything I do. I have never forgotten what Tottenham has given, the trust it has placed in me, and I am determined not to let you down." David Lammy
David has not just spent his 10 years fighting for Tottenham, but also for the wider black and ethnic minority community. As one of only 15 BME members sitting in the current Parliament, David has a unique responsibility to fight for the interests of that under-represented community. In this decade, David has made a point of supporting many of the groups that work with engaging and empowering black and ethnic minortiy candidates across the country, and, in particular, London.
