From the Tottenham and Wood Green Journal. TOTTENHAM MP David Lammy has spoken of his jubilation at friend Barack Obama's historic election victory in the United States. The 36-year-old MP has a well-documented friendship with the Democrat who stormed home to win the presidency yesterday (Wednesday). Mr Lammy said: "It's a night that will resonate deeply in Tottenham. I think what he's achieved is extraordinary and I think that young people in my constituency will draw huge inspiration from the way that he's conducted himself." The MP's wife was in Chicago and spoke to Mr Obama and his wife after the win. "She said that they were warm, relaxed, humble, but very serious about what they've got ahead," said Mr Lammy. He first met the new president in 2005 at a black alumni event at Harvard Law School and forged a friendship which arguably leaves him one of the better connected ministers in the British Government. "I'm grateful for the friendship that I have but in the end he's got to get on with the business of being president, so I don't want to overstate that," said Mr Lammy. On the historic nature of the win, he added: "It was 1963 that Martin Luther King said that he hoped that one day his children would be judged by the content of their character and not by the colour of their skin, and I think that came true tonight. I congratulate Barack Obama.
