'Trans-Atlantic Bridge?' - Britain and Europe in the Post-Bush Era.

David Lammy, spoke at a British Council sponsored debate at Labour Party Conference 2008 entitled: 'Trans-Atlantic Bridge' - Britain and Europe in the Post-Bush Era. The event was chaired by the Rt Hon Lord Neil Kinnock, Chair of the Britich Council and looked at Britain's role in the world, its relations with the United States and Europe as well as the shape of foreign policy in a post-Bush world.

 

Background on the British Council

They are the UK's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations.

•    They work in 110 countries worldwide and our work reached 128 million people last year.

•    Their cultural relations work addresses global issues for the UK:-

•    Improving trust between the UK and other countries, including the Middle East

•    Equipping young people to participate successfully in our globalised world

•    Increasing international understanding and support of the case for tackling climate change

•    They build the networks and relationships that establish long-term influence for the UK through projects in education, the arts, sport, science, climate change, English language and governance .

•    They operate at arm's length from the UK government . In 2007-08 we had an income of £564m of which £189m was government grant.
