Focus on Crime - Meeting with Tottenham's Top Cop.
Saturday, 21 June 2008

Yesterday, David Lammy MP met with Haringey's Borough Commander Richard Wood at the Tottenham Police Station to discuss fighting crime in Tottenham.

The Commander gave a generally positive report, noting that crime is down across the board in the constituency. He highlighted recent successes in using unmarked cars and reaching out to the community.

The two also discussed areas where improvement is needed. The Commander noted that burglaries have risen slightly over the past year and talk about how the police were working to improve their response to such incidents.

Although knife crime has not risen in Tottenham, David and the Commander discussed the broad problem that exists throughout the country and agreed that the knife-carrying culture must change and that the police can do more to build a bond of trust with the community.

At the end of the meeting, Lammy and Wood walked together through the surrounding neighbourhood, being stopped at various points by local residents who had questions, needed help, or just wanted to say hello.

Following the walkabout, David said, “I have long thought that the police can be most effective when they are seen, respected, and trusted in the community, and Chief Superintendent Wood is doing a great job in this respect.

"I look forward to continuing to work with him on the challenges that we still face in order to make our neighbourhoods safer and more welcoming for all.”
