Going to the 'Heart' of what local pensioners think.
Monday, 16 June 2008

Last Friday, David Lammy took part in an afternoon coffee get together with South Tottenham's 'Young at Heart' older people's group. The meeting followed a promise David made to make a return trip to debate some of the issues they didn't have a chance to discuss during their visit to Westminster a couple of months ago.

During the afternoon at the Triangle Children's Centre they discussed a variety of concerns including: the rising cost of food and fuel; the success of the Freedom Pass; lowering the age at which you are eligible for a free TV License, and concerns about changes to GP surgeries and proposed Polyclinics.

He listened to their concerns and said that he remains committed to ensuring that local people are listened to during the consultation. The discussion around local health issues was also timely as David Lammy had met with Haringey Teaching PCT earlier that afternoon to discuss this very issue.

David commenting after the event said:

"The issue of local health provision could not be more important to me and local residents. I listened to everyone's concerns this afternoon and agree with much of what was said.

"I have repeatedly said to the PCT that I want to see world class facilities in Tottenham, but that any reorganisation must take into account local views and balance the need for new state-of-the art facilities with the wish of many to see their own GP as close to home as possible.

"Residents are also keen to see that any new or improved facilities are served properly by public transport - I couldn't agree more."

Commenting on Young at Heart he said:

"I would like to thank Eileen West and everyone at Young at Heart for organising today's interesting event. As a local MP it is incredibly important to me to hear what residents really think face-to-face, for me this is what politics is really about."
