Campaigning to Save Broad Lane Post Office.
Sunday, 09 March 2008

Last Friday, David Lammy MP joined local Tottenham Green Councillors in campaigning to save Broad Lane Post Office.

This followed the announcement of plans by the Post Office to close Page Green Post Office on Broad Lane as part of its London Area Plan. Residents and businesses now have until 2nd April to oppose the closure before it takes effect in the summer.

Across the board David Lammy MP, Joanne McCartney AM, and Tottenham Green Councillors Bernice Vanier, Isidoros Diakides and Harry Lister are campaigning against this decision, and they have been on Broad Lane talking local residents about how damaging this closure would be.

It was clear from everyone we spoke to that the community was totally opposed to closing the post office.

Cllr Bernice Vanier said: “You only have to spend a few minutes queuing up in the post office to see how well used it is. I am especially concerned given the whole of N15 has to come here to collect their parcels and undelivered mail. Under the Post Office’s proposals, local residents could soon have to travel all the way to Green Lanes on two buses to get their mail!”

Cllr Isidoros Diakides commented: “I spoke yesterday to an elderly resident from a nearby sheltered housing scheme who’s worried about having to make the journey to another post office — already they suffer from having long queues and people are used to the friendly service they receive here.”

We are especially worried about the detrimental effect this closure could have on vulnerable people.

Cllr Harry Lister added: “Local businesses also rely on Broad Lane and with the likely increase in population with developments at Tottenham Hale; losing this branch will massively increase the queues at other local branches.”

Alongside us we have the support of Residents Associations, Haringey Council, and London Mayor Ken Livingstone - who has threatened to take legal action against the short consultation period.

What can you do?

1. Sign our petition in Broad Lane Post Office:

As local campaigners we have launched a petition opposing the Post Office’s actions that we will use as part of our representations. You can find one in the post office and local shops – we already have hundreds of signatures, but it is really important we get more.

David Lammy MP was one of the first to sign the petition. He said “We are keen to get as many local people involved in our campaign as possible. Signing the petition and putting up a poster will show the Post Office the strength of local feeling. I will be making strong representations to the Post Office and encourage anyone worried about the impact of losing our post offices to do the same.”
