Newroz píroz be! 2007.
Thursday, 15 March 2007
I am delighted to send my best wishes to the Kurdish community for Newroz 2007 and to wish everyone a very happy New Year.

The Kurdish community have for many years made a significant cultural, economic and social contribution to the nature of constituencies like mine in Tottenham. I hope that the community will continue to go from strength to strength in the coming years, becoming ever more confident and involved in all aspects of local life.

I know the marking of Newroz as a festival dates back over 3000 years, and is linked to the celebration of the arrival of spring. For most cultures around the world this time has always been seen as one of regeneration and renewal. I can think of no better testament to the Kurdish community here in London than paying tribute to this energy and vitality by using Newroz to highlight the community’s contribution to life here in London.

I hope that as the Newroz festival grows, it will be come embedded in the wider community, garnering support from other communities, becoming an opportunity to celebrate each other’s cultures and this capital’s diversity.

In recent years, Newroz celebrations across London and around the UK have grown and I am delighted that this year’s cultural events will stretch throughout the month of March and be celebrated by so many people in such a variety of different ways. For instance last year I know over 25 schools took part in the festivities and this year I hope many more will join in.

I would like to congratulate all those who have contributed to making the month such a success.

With best wishes for Newroz 2007.

David Lammy
