On 30th November Tottenham MP David Lammy joined Cllr Nilgun Canver in visiting the offices of the widely read Turkish language newspaper Olay Gazete, which provides news, comment and information to North London’s burgeoning Turkish community – and to many Turkish people in David Lammy’s constituency.
In a lively and frank meeting with Proprietor Mr Nural Ezel, and Editor Mr. Nesin Fehmi, as well as a number of the reporters and newspaper staff, David discussed some the issues and challenges facing London’s Turkish community.
David said:
“The many Turkish constituents who make contact with my office or see my in my advice surgery sometimes tell me that they face a battle to be recognised as the established part of London and wider British society that they have become.
“Newspapers like Olay provide such a valuable service to Turkish people living and working here in Britain – keeping people informed about news and politics here in the UK and from across the world. I am very pleased that the paper has plans to expand, and may soon be distributing an English language edition too.”
The team at Olay Gazette raised some challenging issues with David, including the challenge facing younger people, and of access to services and the chance to gain education and skills to compete in London’s increasingly competitive employment market.
