The Prime Minister and David Lammy, Minister for Skills, travelled to the West Midlands today to meet apprentices at the BMW plant in Hams Hall, Warwickshire.

They met staff and workers at the Hams Hall plant, where all BMW four-cylinder petrol engines are built. They were both there to learn more about BMW's apprenticeship scheme, as the Government makes improving skills among Britain's workforce a top priority.

The Government pledged in the Queen's Speech last week that it wanted to ensure young people remain in education or training until the age of 18. But the Prime Minister used yesterday's visit to emphasise that this did not necessarily mean staying in school, but could involve young people taking part in the types of apprenticeships offered by BMW.
