David Lammy, MP for Tottenham and Minister for Culture, has been nominated in the Elected Representative category for a New Media Awards in the New Statesman, Britain’s leading political magazine, in association with Atos Origin, the leading IT services company. The category of the Elected Representative Award is designed to reward the elected representative who best uses new media technology to communicate with the electorate.
The editor of the New Statesman, John Kampfner said: “As the hits on our own website, www.newstatesman.com, have shot up by almost 150% since our recent relaunch, we have seen first hand the power and potential inherent in the medium. We are delighted to be able to champion those who are using technology to make a real difference to society.”
Earlier this week, Lawrence Lartey of Touch magazine chaired a MediaGuardian panel which placed David Lammy as the second most powerful person from an ethnic minority in the British media. The expert panel, made up of six movers and shakers in the British media industry, was convened by the Guardian in an effort to highlight 30 important figures with “cultural, economic or political influence” that last year’s MediaGuardian 100 might have missed.
David Lammy commented: “I have worked hard to make my website a useful resource and an effective means of ensuring my constituents can see what I am doing at both local and national levels. I also know it’s an important way for constituents to find out how to contact me and tell me their views. It’s a real honour to be nominated for the New Statesman New Media Awards again.”
He continued, “It is also fantastic to have a place on the ethnic minority power list. I was glad that the Guardian chose to showcase the many people from diverse backgrounds in prominent positions within the British media arena.”
As Minister for Culture, David has worked closely with arts and heritage organisations to ensure that outreach programmes have been as extensive as possible, particularly concerning this year’s commemoration of the abolition of the slave trade act.
David Lammy’s website includes archives of his speeches and other commitments, with an extensive gallery of photographs from his engagements. He records regular podcasts on key topics, and now webcasts major speaking engagements.

About MediaGuardian 100
MediaGuardian is a supplement included every Monday with The Guardian newspaper. The MediaGuardian 100 is an annual list published every summer, consisting of men and women deemed to have considerable power and influence in the British media. Last year’s Media 100 list of people was exclusively white, so Lawrence Lartey suggested compiling a list of 30 people of ethnic minority who could have featured on the list, using the same guidelines of selection as the Media 100. The ethnic minority power list was published in MediaGuardian on Monday 2 April 2007.
