David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, is campaigning for the speedy re-opening of the Job Centre Plus office on Tottenham High Road.
The office was closed for refurbishment in May, and no date has been provided for the reopening of this vital community service. The Job Centre processes benefits and provides face to face contact and advice for people seeking work and support. It is especially import for those that need direct support and who may not find it easy to use internet or telephone access points.
A notice on the door of the premises tells customers to telephone or visit an office in Stratford 8 kms away from Tottenham.
David Lammy says:
“I think it is a disgrace that some of the most vulnerable people in Tottenham are being treated with such disdain. The office closed in May, but I have recently seen customers still turning up at the office, only to be shooed away as if they are some inconvenience.”
“I understand that the office was in need of refurbishment, but I do not think being referred to a telephone number in Stratford, which is constantly engaged, is an adequate replacement for fully staffed and busy office”
After visiting the office himself, David Lammy wants to see action:
“I have written to the minister in charge of the Department for Work and Pensions expressing my deep concern and asking him to resolve the matter swiftly. I am determined to fight hard to ensure that this valuable service is restored to Tottenham as quickly as possible. It is not right that many our most vulnerable people are suffering due to an ill thought out refurbishment project.”
“Simple put, people are at risk I don’t want to hear that anyone has lost out on benefits, leading to threats of eviction or bailiff action, because of the closure of this office”
David Lammy is currently awaiting a response from John Hutton MP, the Secretary of State on this issue, but he assures the people of Tottenham that he will continue the campaign to see this office reopened as soon as possible.
