David Lammy asks the people of Tottenham to take part in his survey on the proposed ban in smoking in public places.

David Lammy has this week launched a Tottenham Health Survey on the issue of the proposed ban on smoking in public places. He has already written to all those constituents who expressed an interest in receiving information on health issues, however, he also thought it was right to ask the users of his website their views on this issue.

David Lammy writes "you may have seen in the press recently, that next week Members of Parliament are being asked to vote on the issue of smoking in public places. This is an important issue on which MPs in the House of Commons are having a free vote at the Report Stage of the Public Health Bill."

"Originally, if passed the smoking ban would have applied only to pubs and other licensed premises that serve food i.e. pubs that prepare food in a kitchen. Private members clubs would be able to ban smoking only with the agreement of their members. An amendment to the Bill has been tabled by the members of the Health Select Committee, which will remove the exemptions from smokefree legislation for pubs that do not serve food and for private membership clubs."

"The way in which Parliament chooses to vote on this vital public health issue will have a profound influence on the public’s health for many years to come. As it is a free vote I am keen to see how my constituents and health care professionals operating in Tottenham feel about this issue. That is why I would be grateful if you could take the time to click below, if you are interest in taking part in my smoking survey, so I will be aware of your views when I come to vote."

"Secondhand smoke is a serious workplace health and safety risk. Smoking-related disease still kills more than 100,000 people each year across the UK, and is by far the greatest single contributor to inequalities in health and life expectancy between social classes. A comprehensive smokefree law which has been suggested in the amendment has proved successful in the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and other parts of the World including many States in the US. It will help to protect workers and members of the public from other peoples smoke and encourage many smokers to quit."

"I look forward to your replies with interest."
