| Victory in Campaign to Save Park Lane Post Office |
| Wednesday, 30 June 2004 |
David Lammy MP offers his congratulations to all the residents of Northumberland Park who joined him in the successful campaign to stop the closure of Park Lane Post Office.
After months of uncertainty all the lobbying has paid off as the Post Office announce that the branch will remain open.
In January 2004 the Post Office announced the proposed closure as part of a nationwide programme. David Lammy opposed the closure from the start and met with Senior Post Office Managers and lobbied Government Ministers to make clear the vital part that Post Offices play in the local community.
He said:
“I am delighted that our campaign to keep Park Lane Post Office open has been successful. When the Post Office announced the proposed closure in January I was wholly opposed to it.”
“The decision to keep it open has been a long time in coming and I congratulate everyone who joined me in not giving in and making clear to the Post Office Managers how important Post Office branches are to the community. This decision will be especially good news to older people and young mums in the area for whom the branch is a real lifeline.”
“In the last few years there has been so much energy and investment put into Northumberland Park by its residents. The magnificent Neighbourhood Resource Centre on Park Lane has been a focal point for taking the area forward and for the Post Office just across the road to be closed would have been a real waste.”
David Lammy encouraged all local residents to now use the branch on a regular basis so that its long term survival can be assured.
