Last Friday 5th June, David Lammy MP joined teachers, parents, councillors and children at the official opening of the South Grove Children’s Centre at Seven Sisters Primary School. The centre is one of 12 children’s centres in Haringey which provide services to the under fives and their families. They have been built with the support of the Government, and are a new investment in the key early years development before children start school. South Grove is in an area of South Tottenham where there are 480 children aged 0-5 years and will provide: - Stay & Play drop-in sessions (Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays);
- Work focussed interviews with Job Centre Plus and Working Links for parents looking for work or training; and
- English lessons for speakers of other languages in family learning sessions with Haringey Adult Learning Service.
A number of other activities are planned for the future, including: - A group for fathers and male carers with young children
- Teenage parent support
- Links with healthcare support
- Childminders support groups
- Links to other private and voluntary childcare providers
David said after the opening: “Over two years ago, I visited Seven Sisters Primary School and I was shown where this new Children’s Centre was going to be. Now we can see the hard work of everyone involved in this project has paid off. “I am immensely proud to have opened the South Grove Children’s Centre. I have seen the incredible difference children’s centres have made across Tottenham, and hope this new investment in the lives of children and their families in South Tottenham will provide real support to future generations." Cllr Lorna Reith, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “South Grove is the latest of our children’s centres to be formally opened and it provides much-needed help and facilities for local families with young children.” Denise Patrick, headteacher of Seven Sisters Primary School, said: "South Grove Children’s Centre is a small centre, with a big heart. It will be an important part in the daily life of the local community." The centre is in the grounds of Seven Sisters Primary School in South Grove, Tottenham.
