Victory in Campaign Against Betting Shop Clustering

The launch of the National Labour manifesto today (Monday, 12th April 2010) will include a commitment that a future Labour government will legislate to empower councils with the ability to tackle the clustering of betting shops. Councils will have new powers to oppose issueing further gambling licenses on the basis that there are enough already in existence within a local area.

This is a big victory for David Lammy and for Haringey Labour, who have campaigned over the last year for a substantive legislative change.

On hearing the news, David said:

"This is great news for the residents of Tottenham, who have been plagued by betting shops disrupting the balance and vibrancy of Green Lanes and the High Road. It is clear that only a Labour government will protect the diversity and vibrancy of our community when it comes to dealing with betting shops."
