Haringey school pupils are now making some of the best progress in the UK at English and maths. Out of 150 council areas, Haringey is in 30th place for the progress that pupils make in maths between Key Stage 2 and their GCSEs. This places our pupils in the top 20 per cent nationally for this measure. Progress in English is also above the national average. The figures relate to the progress pupils made from their Key Stage 2 results in 2005 to their GCSE results in 2009. Cllr Lorna Reith, Cabinet Member designate for Children’s Services, said: “This is a fantastic result for Haringey’s school children. In 2007, progress in these key subject areas was below the national average. But the hard work of staff and pupils has allowed us not only to meet the average, but to exceed it.
“By helping our students meet the grade in these key skills, we are giving them the start they need in life.”
In Haringey, 65.4 per cent of pupils are making the expected level of progress in maths. This is 6.7 per cent above the national average. In English, 66.1 per cent of pupils are reaching the expected levels, compared to 65.5 per cent nationally.
