David opposes any closure or reduction in A&E services at the North Middlesex or Whittington Hospitals and will resist any damaging reduction in services provided to the people of Haringey.
Haringey and Tottenham residents already have some of the worst health inequalities in London. With no major hospital within the boarders of Haringey, these are our hospitals, and we cannot afford to have these cuts imposed.
We are also determined to not allow one hospital, or one community, to be played off against another and are fighting to save both the North Middlesex and the Whittington’s Accident and Emergencies.
David added:
"Plans are being discussed by health officials that would dramatically alter the way people in Tottenham access health services. Proposals have surfaced which could see the North Middlesex Hospital and The Whittington downgraded to ‘local hospitals’, losing their 24 hour A&E departments and significantly reducing the important role they play in our community.
"I am deeply concerned by the discussed closures and their effects on the health of the people of Tottenham. I am troubled by the health inequalities already experienced by people in Tottenham. As one of the only boroughs without a main hospital with an A&E we need more investment in health – not less. In a borough where male life expectancy falls by 7.2 years within two miles we simply cannot afford to make cuts to these vital services.
"I did not fight for the last nine years to have the North Middlesex rebuilt to serve the people of Tottenham, only to see at the moment the new hospital is about to open, these valuable Accident and Emergency services snatched away.
"The North Middlesex and The Whittington are the closest hospitals for the majority of the people of Tottenham. The distance to any of the other closest hospitals, including Whipps Cross and Homerton is more than twice as far as to The North Middlesex. The Royal Free in Hampstead is three times as far.
"As a father of two young children I am not prepared to gamble with the extra minutes it would take to reach the A&E departments at any of those hospitals. Please join me in signing my petition to save the A&E services at The Whittington and The North Middlesex Hospitals."
