Haringey Council is offering free parking in its Tottenham car parks until the end of January 2012 as part of its on-going campaign to boost trade in the area.

This latest move to help the local economy follows the recent announcement that hundreds of riot-hit businesses will receive a cut in their tax this year worth a total of £1.6m.

The free parking - aimed at encouraging shoppers to support Tottenham businesses over the Christmas and the New Year period - started on 28 October 2011 and will operate every day until January 31, 2012 at the council’s Stoneleigh Road and West Green Road car parks.

Charges will apply before 9am to avoid commuter parking taking spaces from shoppers and on Spurs match days.

Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, said:

"Traders have asked for this to help encourage visitors back to the area to shop or have a meal and this is something we can do to help over the coming months."

This latest initiative is part of a package of support the council has put together to assist riot-hit areas, which includes payments of over £180,000 in grant funds to firms who suffered direct damage and the launch of the ‘I Love Tottenham’ campaign with Spurs to encourage shoppers to the High Road.

Cabinet Member for Economic Development,Cllr Alan Strickland, said:

"Reaching out to our most affected businesses has been top of our list of priorities since this summer’s riots. Over the coming weeks and months we will build on the work already done as we aim to transform Tottenham into a better, brighter and more successful place."
