Haringey Labour yesterday took its fight for fair funding for Haringey pupils to Whitehall. Labour representatives secured a meeting with the Government minister responsible for schools, and Cllr Lorna Reith, David Lammy MP, Karen Jennings PPC met with Diana Johnson MP to argue the case for more funding. Tony Brockman, Chair of the Haringey Schools Forum also attended the meeting. The Haringey Schools Forum has commissioned an independent report from KPMG, which examines pupil funding in Haringey based on the Dedicated Schools Grant. The report shows that Haringey currently receives a shortfall of £35.5m and suggests that Government should change the way in which they calculate of the Area Cost Adjustment, which would reduce the differential between inner and outer London. David Lammy, MP for Tottenham said: “I asked for this meeting, because I am committed to supporting Haringey’s case for a fairer allocation of funding for our schools. We presented a strong case to the Minister for an end to the ‘cliff edge’ effect where Haringey’s schools receive fewer resources than those of neighbouring boroughs. Going forward we must continue this campaign, keep making our case, and supporting local teachers, parents, and governors in our united pursuit of the fair funding that our pupils deserve.” Cllr Lorna Reith said: “We want the children of this borough to have the same opportunities as children from Hackney, Islington and Camden. We want our children to have the skills and qualifications to help them get ahead in life. This about more than just asking for money, this is about ensuring the economic and social future of our borough, which we are determined to fight for.” Karen Jennings, Labour PPC for Hornsey and Wood Green said: “It was a positive, constructive meeting. The Minister was sympathetic to our case, and was very interested in the report that independent consultants have produced” Please click here for more information about the cross community campaign for a "Fair Deal for Haringey'.
