  • Lammy secures a Parliamentary debate on forced academies
  • Lammy to call Gove’s attempts to impose academy status on schools “fundamentally undemocratic”
  • Lammy’s former school one of those affected

David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, has secured an adjournment debate in the House of Commons on Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Michael Gove MP’s plans to force two primary schools in Haringey – including David’s former school, Downhills Primary - to become academies.

The debate is due to take place at 6PM (subject to Parliamentary business) on Thursday 12 January 2012 and will be available on BBC Parliament.

The debate will follow a public meeting due to take place this Monday at Downhills School where David will speak alongside Fiona Millar (Local Schools Network), Christine Blower (General Secretary, NUT), Alasdair Smith (Anti-Academies Alliance) against the imposition of academy status at Downhills.

In anticipation of Thursday’s debate, David Lammy said:

“It is absolutely outrageous that Michael Gove is going over the heads of the parents, teachers and governors in Haringey and imposing academies on our schools.

“We all want the best for our children – we want high standards in schools. But Michael Gove wants to go against the wishes of the whole community.

“This is a fundamentally undemocratic way to push his ideological agenda and I will oppose him all the way.”
