David Lammy has long supported the campaign for fairer funding for Haringey schools. Today, he has secured a meeting between a government Minister from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), the Leader of Haringey Council and representatives from Haringey National Union of Teachers (NUT) to join together and secure a fairer deal for Haringey school children. Whilst national funding has increased significantly from £1808 per pupil per year in 1997 to £4218 per pupil per year in 2010, Haringey pupils currently receive over £1000 per pupil, per year, less than their neighbours in Hackney, Islington and Camden. David said “Haringey school children have benefited enormously from increased Government spending in schools, but I want more than just that for pupils in our borough. If we are to continue raising standards and results, especially in Tottenham, we need more resources, and I am fully committed to the fight to secure them. “It is unacceptable that our pupils receive less funding than those from other equivalent boroughs. So I will continue campaigning and supporting Haringey Council, local teachers, parents, governors and the NUT in their pursuit for the fair funding that our pupils deserve.” He further added "I would also like to thank personally everyone involved in the campaign. Haringey NUT have motivated and brought together an amazing coalition of local people from Haringey that are passionate about the education of our young people. I am pleased that with the support of local politicians, all our voices are now being heard in Parliament and across Government." Cllr Clare Kober, Leader of Haringey Council, said “This is an issue we have campaigned on for many years. I am pleased that we appear to be making progress. I look forward to the meeting with Minister and hope that it will help secure a fairer deal for Haringey’s children.”
