Last Thursday, 18/02/2010, David Lammy spoke at the Somali achievement day in North Tottenham. The ceremony congratulated Somali children across Haringey schools that had achieved good grades in their GCSEs.
The event was also attended by the Borough Police Commander, Dave Grant, local councillors, local headteachers and members of the London Fire Brigade. In his speech, David addressed the need for Somali children to begin aspiring to follow professions in Local Authority and Government. He said that he wants to see Somali firefighters, Somali police chiefs and Somali MPs.
Also at the event were representatives from Haringey's Electoral Registration Scheme. It was their aim to engage Somalian children and parents in the electoral process - for more information on how to register, click here.
Speaking after the event, David said:
"It was a really fantastic day for the Somali community in North London. Whilst there is plenty of room for further achievements and better results, there can be no doubt that the number of Somali students achieving good grades at GCSE has increased significantly. I look forward to handing out awards to even more Somali teenagers in the years to come."
