David Lammy urges Haringey parents to have their say on schools consultation

Wednesday, 19 May 2010

Today, David Lammy urged Haringey parents to take part in the Department for Education consultation, and help secure Fair Funding for our Haringey school children.

The formula used by the Government to allocate funds is currently under review and the public consultation closes on June 7, so it is imperative that Haringey parents have their say on the £1,100 per pupil deficit in funding that Haringey schools face in relation to some of their neighbours.

As one of his first acts on returning to Parliament, David Lammy has written to Nick Gibb, the new Minister of State for Schools, in order to secure a meeting to discuss the matter.

David Lammy said:

“We should not talk down the large growth in school funding that has taken place in the last few years, but it is right that our schools are treated fairly with respect to our neighbours.”

“Haringey schools face many inner-city problems, pay inner-city wages, but are yet to receive the inner-city funding that the schools of Camden, Islington and Hackney benefit from.”

“The new government needs to experience the weight of opinion from the thousands of Haringey families and teachers who lose out under the present system.”

“I have written to Nick Gibb [the new Minister of State for Schools] to secure a meeting to lobby him on this matter.”

Cllr Lorna Reith, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

“Our schools are doing a good job, and we have seen an impressive improvement in recent years. However if we can get the funding formula changed, our schools would be able to achieve even more."

“We have cross-party political support and will be producing our own response to the consultation. However teachers, parents and governors can help too.”
