Last Monday, 15/02/2010, David helped re-open the newly Muswell Hill Youth Centre. The centre has received over £400,000 from the Youth Capital Fund Plus, which the young people applied for themselves. This money has paid for a renovated main hall with a new lick of paint, has re-fitted the kitchen, purchased a recording studio and equipment, and paid for a basketball court.
The newly refurbished centre is aimed at engaging young people in the west of the borough, giving them a space where they can be productive, taking them off the streets.
The launch was attended by David Lammy, and cabinet member for Youth services and deputy leader of the council, Lorna Reith.
David said:
"The centre looks brilliant, and I am sure will become increasingly popular amongst young people in the area. It should be re-assuring for parents to know that there are services like these so that you know your child is safe, and has access to great facilities to do something productive in their spare time, as opposed to hanging around the streets."
Along with the renovated Bruce Grove Youth Centre, the refurbished Muswell Hill Youth Centre fulfils David's 2005 election pledge to increase the quanitity and quality of Youth Services in Tottenham and surrounding Haringey.
