Benefit Cap Forum

Friday, 08 March 2013

From April the government will be trialling the benefit cap in Haringey from April before rolling it out nationwide in the autumn. One of the cuts introduced by the Welfare Reform Act 2012, the government uses the benefit cap to restrict constituents’ benefits to £500 a week if they are in a couple or have children and to £350 a week if they live in a single person household. This is achieved by cutting the amount of housing benefit a claimant receives, but it takes no account of the incredibly high rents in London and so many of my constituents stand to lose their homes in the coming year.

I am seriously concerned that many of the constituents affected have not realised what is about to hit them, so I am holding a Benefit Cap Advice Forum at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, 10 am – 12 pm, on Tuesday 12th March. I will be at this meeting with advisers from Haringey Council, JobCentre Plus, Tottenham Citizens Advice Bureau, London Capital Credit Union and others to talking to constituents about their circumstances and see what can be done to help them cope with the cut.

When: 10am - 12pm, on Tuesday 12 March 2013
Where: Tottenham Green Leisure Centre

If you will be affected by the cap and have received my invite, please do come. If you worry you may be affected by the cap but you have not yet received an invite to the meeting, please email me on so that I can offer you advice and assistance.
